Focus on Nutrient-Dense Calories
Smoothies are a great way to improve the quality of your diet because they are loaded with nutrient-dense calories. I encourage everyone to focus on the ratio of healthy, unprocessed, nutrient-dense foods to processed, calorie-dense foods that they eat. Itâs impossible to eat healthful foods 100 percent of the time, but itâs easy to lose track and eat way more processed calories than we would like. I refer to this concept as optimizing your âCaloRatio.â I use it as a guide to offer a numerical measurement of the quality of your diet.
Counting the ratio of good calories to bad calories rather than focusing on the total number of calories allows you to de-emphasize portion control and instead focus on improving the quality of your food. As you work to maximize your CaloRatio for the day, you will find that you respond differently to those inevitable moments that you find yourself powerless to resist the draw of an unhealthy food choice. The typical calorie counterâs response to a âcheat mealâ is to skip the next meal in order to ensure that your total calorie count for the day does not rise any further. Unfortunately, this is perhaps the worst response since it triggers your body to enter starvation mode and store that chocolate chip cookie rather than burn it. When eating to optimize your CaloRatio, having a chocolate chip cookie or other calorie-dense foods can only be countered by consuming a large amount of nutrient-dense food like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and beans.
Postoperative weight-loss surgery patients thrive on a high CaloRatio diet. Weight-loss surgery triggers your body to burn off your excess fat stores by changing your food preferences. After surgery, you will crave fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, and yogurt. Youâll have no taste for the processed fare you may have craved before surgery. Itâs critical for postoperative patients to harness this redirection of their taste preferences that the surgery causes by creating new habits and new personal philosophies about food. Your ability to do this successfully over the first year or two after surgery is one of the most important factors that will contribute to your long-term postoperative success. A smoothie every morning is a great place to start!
